UNIT 4
Activity 1: Blogging
Directions: Using a Venn diagram, compare and contrast globalism and informationalism. Then make a blog. Submit your work in the pigeon which are provided in you department/college or publish your blog on a webpage and turn in the link to Google class on or before the date as reflected on your study schedule.
GLOBALISM
Globalism, at its core, seeks to describe and explain nothing more than a world
which is characterized by networks of connections that span multi-continental
distances.
It attempts to understand all the inter-connections of the modern world. Moreover, it promotes and increases interactions between different regions and populations around the globe.
Globalism refers to the network of connections that transcends distances of different countries in the world.
INFORMATIONALISM
Informationalism refers to a technological paradigm that replaces and subsumes the previous paradigm of industrialism (Castells 1996).
From metallurgy to transportation, industrialism was marked by a revolution in materials engineering triggered by the Industrial Revolution. Informationalism, on the other hand, is connected with the information revolution that begins after World War II, covering developments associated with computer science and its various expressions in electronics and telecommunication networks. Informationalism manifests itself in the added importance of knowledge, information, and communication in the globalized world where human labor is increasingly involved in the production of immaterial goods.
However, the rise of informationalism as the new paradigm does not suggest that industrialism disappears as a material fact; it only suggests that industrialism loses centrality in discourses of technology.
Moreover, Informationalism is a mode of development of modern society that is structured by and based on knowledge, science, expertise, and information technologies.
Indeed, informationalism subsumes and transforms industrial technologies from within. For example, the automobile, an important industrial artifact, does not become less important. It retains its role and appearance while undergoing an informational transformation whereby the automobile becomes an assemblage of computers and data-communication networks that begin to mediate its basic functions, including acceleration, breaking, and steering.
In conclusion, Globalism and
informationalism have one thing in common, which is the concept of interconnectedness of people, government and state beyond its borders into the
world. They are the indicators of interconnectedness in terms of global trades and information from the different areas around the world. Globalism is the more general explanation or concept of the changes brought by globalization, on the other hand, informationalism is a specific part of globalism which is interconnected in terms of information. Globalism particularly talks about or emphasizes the interaction of individuals and the different states in a borderless manner. It is more likely being made as it connotes oneness of policies that should be made and applied as the global policies that would rule across borders. Informationalism is a newer concept
which particularly tackles the internet which is the specific medium or platform that interconnect every nationality and state with just an information.
It focuses more on the power of information through social media, technology and computers to connect
people, nations and states. It introduces and promotes new interactual landscapes
that bridges the physical gaps of every nation and state. It connects us without
physical distance barriers with the introduction of virtual information where it created a mindset that flow of information is limitless even if we are apart from each other and we could connect easily and conveniently. Through the help of different
technologies just like the invention of cellular phones, the internet and satellites that are rampant in today’s time, the information flows infinitely across territory.
The popularity now of online platforms just like social media and online messaging is the great tool of informationalism.
