UNIT 2 ACTIVITY 3
ACTIVITY 3:Discussion
1. In the case of the Philippines, how much do you think are we involved in the Modern
World-System? What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of being part of such.
The Modern World-System is a capitalist world-economy which is the geohistorical system in which we live.
The Modern World-System is structured politically as an interstate system a system of competing and allying states. Political scientists commonly call this the international system, and it is the main focus of the field of international relations.
Modern World-System are made up of world-empires and world-economies and socialistic systems. The existence of modern political, economic and social systems is founded from the traditional world-systems. There exist classes in a world system which defines various economic, political and social classes. the state leaders and managers have the obligation of uniting the various groups in the state to avoid conflicts among the groups.
"Our country, Philippines is involved in the modern world system as a part of the
periphery zone of the world economy. We are colonized by different countries like the US, apart of the core, in which we are supporting now with our natural resources and labor. We don’t just support the US but other more countries using our natural resources by means of exporting and labor by the help of our overseas Filipino workers (OFW)"
Moreover, I think we are deeply involved because we are strictly related to modern world system cause we obtain income by importing nations resources for other countries to enjoy. Philippines exports lots of commodities like bananas, coconuts, petroleum, and specially coconut oil that dominates the export market. Commodities aren’t the thing we export, we also export workers and local services mostly to Middle East and other parts of Asia. We were also colonized twice already first by the Spanish colony and subsequently US colony.
As of now, the Philippines considered as a periphery country. Where the periphery countries are those that are less developed and usually receive a disproportionately small share of global wealth.
In addition, the Philippines is mainly dependent on other countries for it's own development, and has not yet sustained proper economic stability in order to sustain proper development in all sectors of its economy.
ADVANTAGES
• One of the advantages of being part of Modern World-System is the fact that it shows the progress of our society as a whole.
• It demonstrates our status as a contributor to the international economy.
• Core countries will be willing to help us ascend to higher levels in the economy for the development for not only the country, but also for the international economy.
DISADVANTAGES
Disadvantages: lack of privacy, environmental problems, a lack of the sense of common courtesy.
• It highlights as a failures as a country, and thus decreases our reputation as a whole.
• We are more likely to manipulated by other countries with higher power.
• Our dependency make more prone to accepting manipulative deals.
